SEAMLESS COCO

A homage to Coco Chanel’s famous cocktail dress with a seamless geometric pattern detail

This cocktail dress was inspired by the famous Coco Chanel cocktail dress and all the ones that came after it, with a bit of a digital twist: a seamless interlocked pattern on the back designed digitally and laser cut in neoprene.

GOAL

This dress was part of the garments I designed and made for the fashion show System Recovery 2.0 held at Fablab Yucatán in December 2017. I had experimented with seamless patterns during Week 3 of Fabricademy and thought it would be interesting to apply my triangular interlocked design pattern to add a digital flair to an otherwise quit traditional dress.

PROCESS

I started the design in a pretty traditional way, aka by building the dress pattern with paper, pencil and a tailor measuring tape.

After I measured the pattern and adjusted it to fit the model’s body (not mine unfortunately for me), I translated my analog design to Rhinoceros to digitalize it. I already had my seamless patterns in Rhinoceros, so I adapted them to the garment so I would have enough to cover the back.

After a couple iterations laser cutting the pattern I finally had it right and was able to sew it together, interlocking the seamless pattern pieces together and sewing them to the back of the garment.

OUTCOME

Seamless Coco was showcased at System Recovery 2.0, held at Fablab Yucatán in December 2017 and then at FILEY Mérida in March 2018. It has received multiple requests to be tailor made for women and I am starting to fulfill a few of the orders,
